In case you're not familiar with him, he was one of a few westerners that have been very instrumental to bringing eastern spirituality to the west. Especially Vedanta and Buddhism.

Key to this article of this idea that you can't beat down your ego by pure will. That only strengthens the ego. His viewpoint is similar to Sri Ramakrishna's viewpoint of dismissing the ego as an annoying "scoundrel" and not paying much attention to it.
